In spite of steady progress in restoring diplomatic ties since the 1982 conflict over the disputed South Atlantic islands, sovereignty over the Falklands/Malvinas remains a very contentious and sensitive issue in the UK and Argentina alike.

A British tanker's right to drill for oil in the North Falkland Basin reignited these dormant tensions last month, inciting a war in the media. In the end, Argentina's threats amounted to very little; the issue has largely blown over, likely to be reignited again at some point in the future.
